Are autoantibodies the cause, or result, of autoimmune disease?

At the 'Autoimmunity Congress Asia' in Hong Kong on 22 Nov 2013, Professor Trevor Marshall introduced new molecular knowledge about human antibodies, and human autoantibodies, which points away from the antibodies being causal, but a manifestation of immune response to the persistent human microbiome. Autoantibodies seem to be 'collateral damage' as the body tries to fight pathogenic elements of the human microbiome.
